Sacred Significance: Rameswaram is where Lord Rama built the Setu (bridge) to Lanka to rescue Sita. The temple's 22 sacred theerthams (holy water bodies) are said to cleanse all sins — bathing in all 22 is the primary ritual of this yatra.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Night Departure & Arrival, Temple Rituals
Night departure from Chennai (~8 hrs drive). Cross the iconic Pamban Bridge at dawn — one of India's most breathtaking railway/road bridges over the ocean, connecting Rameswaram island to the mainland. Morning: Arrive Rameswaram. Check-in to dharmasala/hotel. Ritual bath at Agnitheertham (beach adjacent to the temple — most sacred sea bathing point). Late morning: Enter Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple — the longest temple corridor in India (1,220 metres). Participate in the 22 Theertham ritual — priests pour holy water from each sacred tank on devotees. Darshan of Lord Ramanathaswamy. Afternoon: Visit Gandhamadana Parvatham — hillock with a shrine said to hold Lord Rama's footprints, offering 360° view of Rameswaram island. Evening: Sunset at the beach. Dinner. Night rest.
Dhanushkodi & Return
Early morning: Second darshan at the temple. Morning puja atmosphere. Breakfast. Morning: Drive to Dhanushkodi (18 km from Rameswaram) — the ghost city destroyed by the 1964 cyclone. This is where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean — a divine confluence called Kothandaramaswamy. See the ruins of the old church, railway station and post office reclaimed by the sea. Late morning: Visit Kothandaramaswamy Temple — only structure that survived the 1964 storm, where Vibhishana surrendered to Rama. Visit Five Rathas (rock-cut monuments) and Adam's Bridge viewpoint. Noon: Return to Rameswaram. Check-out. Begin return journey. Arrive Chennai by late evening/night.
